A pure love of retro music and a passion to keep it alive and kicking sparked the phenomenon that is now Chilfest.

What began as an idea at a barbeque with friends, turned into a festival legacy that has been enjoyed by thousands of music lovers for more than a decade.

Hertfordshire’s much-loved boutique festival, the brainchild of our festival director Steve Butcher, has firmly established itself as the must-go-to summer party for family, friends and music-lovers of all ages.

Set in the idyllic Chiltern Hills, Chilfest’s stage has been graced by a multitude of musical legends from the 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond, as well as being hosted by some iconic household names such as Keith Chegwin, Sally James and Pat Sharp.
A knock-out opening year

Our first ever Chilfest in 2013 set the bar high with an impressive bill that included the X-Factor band Little Mix who had just achieved global success – it was a real coup for us as an independent festival.

Little Mix were joined by some 80s heavyweights including Tony Hadley, Howard Jones, Rick Astley, Midge Ure, Hazel O’Connor and Carol Decker, all of whom packed a mighty punch in launching our Tring festival.

It proved to be a hit with the crowd too, who could enjoy some fantastic music on their doorstep in a relaxing family-friendly atmosphere.

A personal dream come true

It was a sentiment shared by our festival director Steve who immediately started preparing for the next year, despite Chilfest originally being planned as a one-off event.

Steve said: “When I first started Chilfest in 2013 as a one-off event, little did I realise that six years later, it would become an annual celebration for 80s music lovers. That first year was such a phenomenal success and a personal dream come true for a self-confessed 80s obsessive like me that I just had to do it again and again and again.”

It was the start of an amazing journey for Chilfest who have continued to attract big names from the music world onto the Hertfordshire stage.

Headline acts

Some of our standout headliners over the years have included synth kings OMD (2017 and 2023) whose enthusiasm onstage is as electric as their music, and The Human League, another electronic success story whose hits including Don’t You Want Me and Mirror Man always captivate the crowd.

Other bill highlights include a magical set from UB40 featuring Ali Campbell (2016), who brought a sunshine Reggae set with classic hits including Red Red Wine, Kingston Town and Food For Thought.

The wonderful Billy Ocean took the audience on a wave of nostalgia in 2015 with mega hits including Suddenly, When The Going Gets Tough, Red Light Spells Danger and Caribbean Queen.

Our festival took a Celtic turn in 2022 with headliners The Proclaimers walking 500 miles with the Chilfest faithful, sparking a highland fling in the crowd who were jigging to their Gaelic grooves.

Taking the crowd on a theatrical extravaganza in 2024 was Soft Cell’s Marc Almond who is the consummate showman, heading the bill with classics such as The Days of Pearly Spencer, Tainted Love, Say Hello, Wave Goodbye and many more.

Musical milestones

The Friday night of our 2015 festival has gone down in history as a boogie night to remember with a hot line-up of disco and soul sensations. Sister Sledge headlined with a party set like no other, inviting eager fans to join them on stage to dance to He’s The Greatest Dancer. Also on the bill that night were Shalamar, Odyssey, Shakatak and Jocelyn Brown, all creating a dream soul line-up.

In later years, we’ve used the Friday night of Chilfest to showcase fantastic tribute acts, as part of a Totally Tribute night, such as Noasis, Ultimate Elton, Rule The World (Take That) and I’m Every Whitney.

Chilfest is constantly evolving and bringing something new to the audience, which in 2024 saw the launch of our Chilfactor competition which gave up-and-coming bands the chance to perform on stage, demonstrating our ongoing support for unsung music-makers.

There’s no doubt that our festival has stood the test of time, each year coming back with renewed vigour and determination to ensure our Chilfestians make lots more musical memories. Chilfest – simply the best.

The Big Weekend – Cambridge Live

The Big Weekend – Cambridge Live

We are excited to announce we will be headlining the Friday night of this fabulous festival in Cambridge. The festival runs over the weekend of July 5th-7th at Parkers Piece in the centre of the historical city of Cambridge.
Stage time on the Friday is 21.00-22.00.

Cambridge Live says:
We are pleased to welcome the legendary Kid Creole and the Coconuts to the Big Weekend on Friday 5 July. Kid Creole and the Coconuts are celebrating its 38th Anniversary this year. That is amazing! Kid claims this is the Farewell Tour, but he has been saying this for 10 years.
Joining him on stage this summer:
The Coconuts =
Sarah McGrath
Roos Van Rossum
Charlotte De Graaf
The Band =
Toby Goodman (drums)
Mark Anthony Jones (guitar)
Michael Gorman (keys)
Oroh Angiama (bass)
Chris Storr (trumpet)
Barnaby Dickinson (trombone)
Edgar Jones (saxophone)
Kid Creole and the Coconuts was born out of the red hot embers of Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band. In the 1970’s the Savannah Band had successfully merged the big band sound of the 1940’s (Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Louis Prima) with the dance floor beat of the disco era. The Kid fused the big band sound with every strain under the sun – calypso, soca, salsa, rhythm and blues, soul, jazz, funk, hiphop, etc… with a strong accent on Caribbeanism. Kid Creole and the Coconuts thus became pioneers of what became known as mongrel music. In other words – a delicious but strange potpourri of goodness.

The Big Weekend is a free to attend, non-ticketed, community event comprised of three days of free family entertainment on the central area of Parker’s Piece, provided by Cambridge City Council, and organised by the charity Cambridge Live.

Alassio

Alassio, Italy

Kid Creole and his Coconuts are very excited to be a part of WWWK in Alassio, Italy on October 6th, 2018.

Christopher Cross, Kid Creole and the Coconuts and the Earth Wind and Fire will be on the stage of the second edition of WWWK, in Alassio, on October 6th 2018.

Alassio

Giampiero Colli keeps his word and does it with a bang. Indeed, with three. Christopher Cross, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Earth Wind and Fire: this is the fabulous trio of stars that will be the protagonist of the second edition of WWWK on 6 October, When We Were Kids, the event that last year has inflamed the Riviera. In the Borgo Barusso, venue of the event, Colli worked in silence with Adriano Berrino and the two took another formidable gift for their Alassio from the cylinder.

“I was unbalanced – says Colli – ensuring that we would get over it, and I really believe I have kept my promise”. And that’s not all. In full WWWK style, in fact, there will be a top level food and wine: with another move that will not fail to amaze, this year the tasting of WWWK will be curated by Franciacorta, which with its famous cellars will offer the public the best of the Italian “bubbles”. “Franciacorta is today – continues Colli – an absolute excellence of drinking in the world: a true Italian pride: for us, having them at our side means the certainty of giving the city another manifestation of global stature”.

A rich menu curated by “Svizzera Ricevimenti”, a leader in luxury catering, will complete the charm of the special alassina night.

After Tony Hadley, the Boney M and the Village People, then, preparations for a new adventure start that promises to recreate and overcome the magical atmosphere of 2017. The stage will be set up in Piazza Pacini, suitable to accommodate the predictable “invasion” of fans and gourmets. Like last year the Borgo Barusso will be the scene of the food and beverage section, with Franciacorta and the buffet of Switzerland Ricevimenti.

The three groups are authentic legends of the ’70s and’ 80s, decades in which they expressed their best: Christopher Cross is among the few singer-songwriters able to boast at least four songs become in effect “evergreen”: the engaging “Run like the wind “, the dreamy” Sailing “, the serenade in New York City of” Arthur’s theme “, from the movie” Arturo “, (the title of the piece is” Best that you can do “) and the rhythm of” Never be the same “, Passing to other hits like” Minstrel Gigolo “and” Say you’ll be mine “. His voice is unmistakable, which in Alassio will resound with his particular and beloved tone.

Kid Creole and the Coconuts are and remain true disc icons: with their 1950s look and a very distinctive Caribbean-style salsa they dominated the tracks of those years for a long time. With a horny section of strong support and the great stage presence of their frontman, each of their live shows enthuses and engages audiences of all ages. In Alassio they will not spare their successes, like “Stool Pigeon”, Annie, I’m not your daddy “,” Endicott “and the immortal” Male Curiosity “, part of the soundtrack of the film” Against All Odds “.

Earth, Wind and Fire, to use an abused term, need no introduction. “Boogie Wonderland”, “September”, “Fantasy”, “After the love has gone”: dozens of Grammy Awards, endless platinum records, entire weeks at the top of the charts all over the world. The formation that will perform in Alassio is the one led by Al Mckay, who with the late Maurice White founded the group, writing most of the music. Sixteen artists of the highest level, true myths in their instruments, which make up the current formation, which gives the best of itself live.

Kid Creole and the Coconuts are very excited to playing this fantastic venue this summer!

For tickets go to: TICKETS

The Roman Theatre of Orange is a Roman theatre in Orange, VaucluseFrance. It was built early in the 1st century AD. The structure is owned by the municipality of Orange and is the home of the summer opera festival, the Chorégies d’Orange.

It is one of the best preserved of all Roman theatres, and served the Roman colony of Arausio (or, more specifically, Colonia Julia Firma Secundanorum Arausio: “the Julian colony of Arausio established by the soldiers of the second legion”) which was founded in 40 BC. Playing a major role in the life of the citizens, who spent a large part of their free time there, the theatre was seen by the Roman authorities not only as a means of spreading Roman culture to the colonies, but also as a way of distracting them from all political activities.

Fiesta Sète

FIESTA SÈTE, FRANCE
NEW DATE JUST ADDED!
Festival : Fiesta Sète, France
Venue : Théâtre de la Mer
City : Sète
Date : August 6th  2018

It was twenty-two years ago … the punch was more fashionable than the mojito, and Wim Wenders had not yet become infatuated with Cuban papys that would not be long in the wake of his Buena Vista Social Club , to capsize the biggest international stages. But the very young Métisète association already swore by Afro-Cuban rhythms. In 1997, stunned by a little sea breeze, José Bel Mr. Open Music, a legendary record store in Sète (from 1975 to 2002), music lover and cultural activist in the youth clubs and film club, decided to extend his love for music by creating a festival that he still runs. this day voluntarily.Accompanied by some local locals just as passionate they have decreed that the Sète Corniche was well worth the Malecon Havanese, and that the time was ideal to put the Fiesta Latina festival on stream . The Latin sail then pushed them to other shores, from the Indian Ocean to Africa via the Balkans: a whole world of music that the festival, aptly renamed Fiest’A Sète , never stops explore since to share the riches.

It was twenty-two years ago, and the world was not yet a click away. Indeed, we can today, without leaving his chair, discover an underground group in Kinshasa or even attend the concert of a Pakistani cult artist disappeared for fifteen years. But try, in front of your computer screen, to taste this stunning sea breeze, and the sweetness of a summer evening sublimated by an unknown language; So try, thanks to the internet, to hit in the hand of a legend of the tempo of Bootsy Collins or Nile Rodgers, to dance among the musicians of Toto La Momposina, to meet the warm glance and the radiant smile of Boubacar Traoré. So try to feel the emotion of the meeting, the sweet vibration of the shared party, the intensity of the living music. Not won …

Yes, live music rather than world music simply because the ones we cherish speak to the present of our world today. Our choices remain guided, for the most part, by a certain idea of modernity, miscegenation and movement . Nothing excites us as much as the musical proposals with new flavors, the most audaciously prepared mixtures, provided that quality and pleasure are at the rendezvous !
