In the 1970’s the Savannah Band had successfully merged the big band sound of the 1940’s (Duke Ellington\, Cab Calloway\, Artie Shaw\, Count Basie\, Louis Prima) with the dance floor beat of the disco era. The Kid fused the big band sound with every strain under the sun – calypso\, soca\, salsa\, rhythm and blues\, soul\, jazz\, funk\, hiphop\, etc… with a strong accent on Caribbeanism. Kid Creole and the Coconuts thus became pioneers of what became known as mongrel music. The composition of this group of the 80s has changed dramatically over the years\, we will mainly remember its leader August Darnell. Thomas August Darnell Browder\, or simply August Darnell was born inthe Bronx where he grew up\, New York bathing in the multiplicity of cultures and getting acquainted with many kinds of music. At the end of the 70s\, Andy Hernandez and August Darnell together set up the group Kid Creole and the Coconuts accompanied by many musicians. The group is not long to  talk about it with the release of their first single "Maladie d'amour" in 1980. The first album\,  "Off the coast of me" arrives the same year with thirteen titles. A year later\, they return with  "Fresh fruit in foreign places" a kind of musical travel diary with twelve titles. Follows then   "Tropical gangsters" who arrives at the 3rd place of the UK Albums Chart. In 1983\, Kid Creole &   the Coconuts released "Doppelganger" with titles such as "The lifeboat party" or "Broadway rhythm". With Kid Creole And The Coconuts\, the cocktail of soul-calypso-rock and self-deprecating rhythmsfinds its happiest expression\, with the luscious presence of the delightful Coconuts.\n \n40 summers young this summer \nWhat are forty birthday candles compared with the fireworks that light up Marciac every summer? If you drew the equation with the true length of the festival over four decades of thrills\, then you would have 600 nights at the least\, plus as many days of jubilation and\, for good measure\, almost 6\,000 raised curtains\, enough to wear out more than one national theatre… By way of a ruby anniversary marking its fidelity to a genre in music that recognizes how much it owes to the Gers village\, Jazz in Marciac is rewriting its pastoral symphony in rhythm this year. Everyone — Mayor\, godfathers\, maids of honour\, best men\, bridesmaids and witnesses — will be raining confetti over the finest parade ever held.  First in line\, in terms of protocol\, are those that we listen to come rain or come shine: Norah Jones\, the priestess with the voice of a healer\, returns to jazz; George Benson is synonymous with scat and guitar in unison; Herbie Hancock is a keyboard geek and the vehicle for 60 years of jazz\, all trends combined… In the seats reserved for the faithful we have: Roy Hargrove\, the worthy narrator of forms inherited from bebop; Stanley Clarke\, at the summit of his virtuoso double bass (and his brazen slap electric instrument); Biréli Lagrène\, the expert climber roping down from every peak of inspiration that takes his fancy… And Joshua Redman\, whose civilized manners hide a sense of freedom and purpose that his father would certainly have endorsed. The Latin cousins are coming too\, bringing their dances and that Afro-Cuban legitimacy without which the festival would have to relinquish its exotic\, heterogeneous and xenophile share in culture: Chucho Valdès and Roberto Fonseca feel at home there. Turbulent youngsters rightfully have their seats too: Emile Parisien (who has improvised a second birthplace for himself right here in Marciac on the benches of a school); Vincent Peirani\, an accordionist whose intriguing ubiquity speaks volumes for him; Electro Deluxe and Panam Panic\, retro and modern at the same time\, they are seekers and finders of groove. Finally\, all anniversaries have surprises: what statements are the Labèque Sisters going to make from behind a piano peppered with Basque percussion? Or Henri Texier\, a totem of the double bass\, lyrical and libertarian\, giving Manu Katché the keys of the metronome? DESCRIPTION:Retropop in Dutch:\nRetropop wordt georganiseerd door Zalavolbate\nWie en wat is eigenlijk Zalavolbate? Sinds een jaar of 16 zijn de spelers van zaalvoetbalvereniging Emmen al te vinden in de Drentse sportzalen. Het ene seizoen wat succesvoller dan het andere\, maar over het algemeen altijd strijdend voor een plaats in de bovenste regionen. In het zestienjarig jarig bestaan zijn ze één keer kampioen geweest. Uiteraard zijn de heren een ingespeeld geheel als voetbalteam\, maar ook op sociaal gebied is er in de loop van de jaren een hechte groep ontstaan met weinig tot geen verloop in de gelederen. De naam Zalavolbate is dan ook een verbastering van het woord “zaalvoetbal”. \nZalavolbate\np.a. Die leiden je naar de juiste parkeerplaatsen. De diverse parkeerterreinen van Retropop liggen op een paar honderd lopen van de hoofdingang. Parkeren is overigens gratis. Voor fietsers is er vlak bij de ingang een speciale (fiets)parkeerplaats. \nHoe laat begint het en hoe laat eindigt het?\nTerrein open: 12.00 uur\nAanvang: 13.00 uur\nEinde: 00.00 uur \nKan ik tussentijds het terrein verlaten en later terugkomen?\nJa dat kan. Bij het verlaten van het terrein ontvangt u een stempel \nIs het mogelijk om kleine kinderen mee te nemen?\nWij raden het meebrengen van kleine kinderen naar een massa evenement absoluut af\, maar wij kunnen hen natuurlijk de toegang tot het festival niet ontzeggen. Voor iedereen geldt dezelfde regel: al wie het festivalterrein binnen wil moet in bezit zijn van een geldig ticket en wel om volgende redenen: \nDit is een ontmoediging omdat wij ouders er op attent willen maken dat kleine kinderen bij onregelmatigheden gevaar kunnen lopen.\nDe organisatie wil met het verkopen van een toegangsticket een overeenkomst sluiten met degene die het kaartje koopt voor het kind. Met het kopen van een toegangsticket aanvaarden de ouders van het kind de volledige verantwoordelijkheid. Er is geen kinderopvang voorzien noch wordt er korting voor kinderen toegekend. \nHoe oud moet je zijn om naar Retropop te mogen?\nDe adviesleeftijd is 16 jaar. Als je jonger bent\, moet je in gezelschap zijn van iemand ouder dan 18 jaar. Verder wordt het meenemen van baby’s en kinderen afgeraden. Wel moet er ook voor kinderen het volledige bedrag betaald worden. Let op: we schenken geen alcohol aan personen onder de 18! \nMoet ik mijn legitimatie meenemen?\nJazeker\, je bent bij wet verplicht om je identiteitsbewijs altijd bij je te hebben. Je kunt op Retropop aan de bar gecontroleerd worden op leeftijd. We verkopen namelijk geen alcohol aan personen onder de 18 jaar. Wil je voorkomen dat je elke keer gecontroleerd wordt? Bij de muntenkassa kun je op vertoon van je legitimatie een polsbandje krijgen. Hiermee weet het barpersoneel dat je ouder bent dan 18\, en dus lekker een biertje mag drinken. \nWanneer gaat het festivalterrein open en hoe laat begint het programma?\nJe kunt op zaterdag 4 juni 2016 vanaf 12.00 uur het festivalterrein op. De eerste band begint om 13.00 uur. Het programma is afgelopen om 00.00 uur. \nWat zijn de betaalmiddelen op het terrein? Kun je munten pinnen?\nBetaalmiddelen zijn munten. Munten zijn te koop op het terrein bij de speciale muntenkassa’s. Je kunt munten pinnen bij de muntenbalies op het festivalterrein\, geld pinnen kan niet. \nMag ik mijn fototoestel/Selfie-stick meenemen op het festivalterrein?\nAls het een huis-\, tuin- en keukencamera is\, wel. Professionele apparatuur is niet toegestaan; toestellen met afneembare lenzen worden sowieso niet toegelaten\, net als filmcamera’s en opname-apparatuur. Ook Selfie-sticks zijn verboden! \nMag ik mijn eigen voedsel en drank meenemen naar het festival terrein?\nNee\, dit is niet toegestaan m.u.z. allergieën en speciale diëten. \nWaar kan ik mijn spullen kwijt?\nRetropop beschikt over een eigen bewaakte garderobe. \nHoe zit het met drugs op het Retropop?\nHet is volgens de Nederlandse wet verboden om drugs bij je te hebben of te verhandelen. \nMag ik mijn hond meenemen?\nOp het festival zijn honden en andere huisdieren niet toegestaan. \nZijn er rolstoel-plaatsen op het terrein?\nOp het Retropop festival staan rolstoel podia. Hiervandaan heb je een goed uitzicht op het podium. \nIk heb kaarten gekocht en nu kan ik niet meer heen\, kunnen deze kaarten retour?\nVerkochte kaarten worden niet teruggenomen en kunnen niet worden omgeruild. \nStaat jouw vraag er niet tussen\, kijk dan even naar het reglement.
